What Employee Data Can Exist Around a PEO Relationship?

Payroll cannot function without employee data.

Benefits cannot be administered without employee data.

The interesting question is not whether information exists.

It is what categories exist and why they are used.

Trion publishes a Worksite Employee Privacy Policy dated February 21, 2024. The document says it applies to personal information collected online and offline about worksite employees.

Personal Identifiers

The policy lists examples including name, Social Security number, date of birth, driver’s-license or state-ID information, passport details and employee ID.

These are highly sensitive categories.

An independent editorial website has absolutely no legitimate reason to collect most of them.

Account Information

The same policy includes usernames, passwords and other credentials used for company accounts and systems among account-information categories.

Financial Information

The policy includes financial information associated with payroll, including bank-account information for direct deposit.
